India’s Central Electricity Authority has modelled a need for 27GW/108GWh of battery storage by 2030 to meet national goals of adding 500GW of renewable energy capacity from solar and wind, while battery storage could be an export opportunity as well.
A few select national markets are driving the battery energy storage deployments for 2021 and 2022, namely Great Britain, Germany, Ireland and Italy, according to EMMES 6’s data. They will account for over three quarters of the 5GW-plus battery energy storage deployments this year, as shown in the graph below.
Therefore, your export payments won’t be affected by installing a battery storage system. Something to bear in mind is that the smart meter rollout – expected to be completed by 2020 – might well affect the export tariff. Smart meters will automatically they read how much electricity you export, as well as how much you export.
Mainland China accounts for most of the global energy storage demand, driven in the near term by regional requirements for new utility-scale wind and solar projects to include energy storage capacity. However, the Chinese market is entering an era of change.
Most major battery makers, such as Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), BYD, EVE Energy, CALB and Hithium, develop products specifically for the energy storage market, driving a continued deviation from the electric-vehicle chemistry mix, which features a larger proportion of nickel-based lithium-ion battery chemistries.
Nonetheless, BNEF still expects strong demand for batteries, as the policy doesn’t explicitly require mandates to stop. Since the policy announcement, some provinces across China have continued to announce mandates stipulating that new solar and wind projects must be paired with batteries.
