A review of recent publications on 5GDHC reveals a significant increase in research activity since 2015. While previous studies have examined important aspects of 5GDHC, there has been a notable emphasis on integrating 5GDHC within smart energy systems and facilitating cross-sectoral and renewable energy integration.
The 5th generation heat network and its counterpart cooling systems have grown in light of stricter regulations in terms of building energy consumption as well as enhanced citizen focus on environmental impact and economic performance. Technological developments have allowed the development of 5th generation district heating and cooling models.
Fifth-generation systems can offer benefits beyond fourth-generation systems especially when the levels of heating and cooling demands are similar. They boost efficiency, encourage greater use of renewable sources and can lower overall costs.
When cooling energy is demanded, heat pumps work to eliminate heat. 5th generation district heating and cooling is bringing decarbonization goals closer, pushing cities’ efforts for cleaner air and the fight against climate change.
Fifth-generation systems use bi-directional pipes and a modern control and communications infrastructure (Figure 6.7) to allow users to consume or generate heat, or exchange it among themselves (E.ON, 2022; Kensa Heat Pumps, 2022).
The framework demonstrates significant performance enhancement, real-time adaptability, and deployment viability, offering a transformative step toward intelligent, resilient, and sustainable solar energy systems.
