South Africa is aiming to procure utility-scale battery storage with two tender programmes: its Battery Storage IPP Procurement Programme as well as hybrid battery storage and variable renewables projects through its Risk Mitigation IPP Procurement Programme.
The sixth project under the first bid round is at Mogobe (Ferrum substation), 103MW/412MWh, being developed by Scatec ASA. In South Africa, battery energy storage systems (BESS) have also been identified by Eskom as a reliable power supply on demand, even when the energy grid is unstable.
The evaluation process, conducted by an Independent Bid Evaluation Committee under strict security measures, took place at the IPP Office. The Battery Energy Storage Programme is a critical initiative aimed at enhancing South Africa’s power system by providing essential ancillary services and increasing grid capacity through energy storage.
This last project is finalising preparations and final conditions to reach commercial close in early 2025. A further two Battery Energy Storage bid windows currently underway. Bid Window 2 (totaling 615M) is currently in evaluation phase with bid announcement expected within the next few weeks.
The Battery Energy Storage Programme is a critical initiative aimed at enhancing South Africa’s power system by providing essential ancillary services and increasing grid capacity through energy storage. The ancillary requirements for all the BESIPPPP Programmes are as follows: Supplemental reserves.
Following the signing of the agreements with these additional two projects South Africa has secured a total of 360 MW/1440 MWh storage capacity under the country’s first grid-scale bid window.
