This paper explores the role of BESS in the ASEAN energy landscape, examining current trends, benefits, challenges, and the pathway towards optimising its potential across the region.
From January to May 2025, Southeast Asia has witnessed a surge in clean energy developments, with large-scale solar, wind, and battery storage projects gaining momentum across the region.
With many South-east Asian nations committed to transitioning to cleaner energy and rolling out roadmaps to guide their plants and goals, solar energy and BESS convergence

Of the 11 ASEAN members, Singapore is taking the lead in the battery energy storage systems (BESS) space. Earlier this year, the city-state launched the region’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS).
However, ASEAN has many untapped markets for energy storage applications. Hence, to maximise the market potential and accelerate the low carbon transition in ASEAN, this policy brief recommends several enabling policies for energy storage. The renewables-based transformation would need a massive investment in electricity infrastructure to maintain the balance of supply and demand. ASEAN has adequate policies to positively influence the attractiveness of energy storage through renewable energy investment, both on-grid and off-grid.
ASEAN has adequate policies to positively influence the attractiveness of energy storage through renewable energy investment, both on-grid and off-grid. However, ASEAN has many untapped markets for energy storage applications.
However, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) bloc is falling behind in technology implementation due to a lack of awareness and policy initiatives. Of the 11 ASEAN members, Singapore is taking the lead in the battery energy storage systems (BESS) space.
Typical BESS components include battery modules, a storage enclosure with thermal management, a power conversion system (PCS), a battery management system (BMS) and an energy management system (EMS). A few other ASEAN countries are also starting to wake up to the advantages of BESS in their respective energy sectors. But, it’s a slow start.
