Amidst Poland’s transition from traditional energy sources to a renewable-centric landscape, battery storage is well-positioned to help ensure the grid’s operability, provide the system with firm capacity and complement the intermittent nature of renewable energy.
We are advancing battery energy storage projects in Poland, with two prominent developments in Trzebinia and Kozienice, totalling 245MW of capacity. As a key component in accelerating decarbonization efforts, battery storage is a crucial technology in adopting renewable energy sources while upholding system flexibility.
Polish state-owned power company PGE Group is planning to build a battery energy storage system (BESS) of at least 200 MW/820MWh in the north of Poland. The project has obtained the first license promise in Poland for electricity storage, PGE said in a press release.
Poland is emerging as a significant player in Europe's energy storage sector. The recent capacity market auctions in December 2024 highlighted a substantial shift towards BESS, with approximately 2.5 GW secured by new generation capacity market units, predominantly Li-ion energy storage projects.
Today, DRI has taken an important next step on its 133 mw 4h (532 mwh) battery storage project in trzebinia, poland, by acquiring 100% of the shares from columbus energy. DRI, the EU renewables arm of DTEK, announced in March this year that it had acquired the rights to build the first and largest battery storage based in southern Poland.
Most of the Polish production of lithium-ion cells is located in the western part of the country for a reason. The largest recipients of batteries manufactured in Poland are German companies - Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW. Moreover, Polish batteries go to vehicles manufactured under the Škoda brand.
