MPA said five Maritime 5G base stations have been installed and operationalised as of 2024. Up to seven more base stations will be operationalised by 2025 to complete Maritime 5G coverage in all Singapore port’s major fairways, anchorages, terminals and boarding grounds.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) on Wednesday (5 March) said more Maritime 5G base stations will be operational by 2025 to provide new maritime services and innovations such as digital bunkering operations. MPA said five Maritime 5G base stations have been installed and operationalised as of 2024.
The first two 5G SA networks have achieved 95% nationwide outdoor coverage as at end-2022. We are also the first country to extend 5G SA coverage to the sea in Aug 2022, so that 5G solutions can be enabled for the maritime industry and support growth of our maritime hub.
“With the enhancement of coverage of the Maritime 5G network, users of the Singapore port will experience stronger and more stable connectivity. The enhanced coverage is also expected to unlock new 5G-enabled maritime services and innovations,” it said on its website.
5G Standalone (SA) Mobile Networks. In 2019, we made the decision to build 5G SA mobile networks directly, instead of building incremental Non-Standalone (NSA) networks that are grafted onto existing 4G networks and can only deliver faster speeds.
In general, our users in Singapore observe a higher quality of 5G services when they connect to 5G SA networks. They enjoy faster 5G download speeds across all operators that deployed 5G SA, compared to the 5G NSA networks. Singtel wins the speed race on 5G SA networks, hitting the 400Mbps milestone.
