1.2. Energy Security Brunei relies heavily on fossil fuels for its domestic power generation (natural gas and diesel) and road transport (gasoline and diesel). Although domestic supplies certainly remained secure, the vulnerability of these supplies would entail disruptions that could cause power outages and insufficient fuel supply.
However, Brunei has only put in 1.2 MW of solar as of now as a demonstration project. It's reasonable to assume that the implementation of renewable energy is still in its infancy. There are, however, particular actions Brunei might take to quicken this process and increase its involvement in sustainable energy in the ASEAN area.
Crude oil and natural gas were the main energy resources in Brunei Darussalam. In 2015, total primary energy was met mainly by natural gas (84%); oil’s share remained at 16%. Total primary energy supply declined by 3% in 2014–2015, from 4,154 kilotons of oil equivalent (ktoe) to 4,034 ktoe.
In 2014, Brunei adopted a strategic plan to achieve 10% share of renewables in the national energy mix by 2035. The plan provides the outline to introduce renewable energy policy and regulatory frameworks and to scale-up market deployment of solar PV.
Dr Rohaniyati Salleh of MOD highlighted the benefits and challenges of saving energy in Brunei Darussalam. As an energy-exporting country, Brunei Darussalam must ‘save more and sell more energy’. The benefits of saving energy are endless: boosting the economy, reducing carbon emissions, and creating jobs, amongst others.
Other regional discoveries have generated optimism that there may be additional on-shore and off-shore reserves, which may further Brunei’s interest in increasing production. One of the roles of the Department of Energy is to strengthen sustainable energy efforts through energy efficiency initiatives.
